Favorite (New) Adult BIPOC fantasy books

Finding New Adult fantasy novels by BIPOC own-voices authors can be a challenge—at least for me. And since I’m a picky reader, it’s even rarer for me to come across one that earns a solid 4 or 5 stars.
I love fantasy books with rich, immersive worldbuilding, a compelling plot, and a touch of romance. Having been a lifelong reader, I’ve grown weary of certain tropes and settings—fae, vampires, and medieval Europe, to name a few. That said, I’m not entirely opposed to them; it just takes an amazing twist to grab my interest.
Without further ado, here are my top three New Adult fantasy own-voices books!
Sue Lynn tan
Daughter of the Moon Goddess
Inspired by the legend of Chang’e, this book follows Xingyin, who spent her life hidden on the moon—until her magic exposes her to the Celestial Emperor. Forced to flee, she trains in the Celestial Kingdom, mastering archery and magic while navigating court intrigue, forbidden romance, and a quest to free her mother.
Oh, this was such a wonderful read! Malaysian author Sue Lynn Tan crafted everything I long for in a New Adult fantasy—intricate worldbuilding steeped in Chinese mythology, a strong yet non-stabby heroine with intelligence, a romance subplot filled with tension, and plot twists that kept me on my toes. It’s no surprise this book was a Goodreads Choice Awards nominee in 2022!

alexis henderson
The Year of the Witching
In the puritanical land of Bethel, Immanuelle has spent her life trying to conform—despite her existence being deemed a sin. When she strays into the forbidden Darkwood, she uncovers a dark legacy tied to her mother and the powerful witches who once defied Bethel’s oppressive rule.
This debut by biracial American author Alexis Henderson was an absolute page-turner! Hauntingly atmospheric, it weaves together mystery, eerie elements, and a gripping romance subplot. A Goodreads Choice Awards nominee in 2020, this book is a definite recommendation!
L Penelope
Song of Blood & Stone
In a world divided by a magical barrier, outcast Jasminda just wants a quiet life on her farm—until she rescues an Elsiran spy and learns that war is imminent. With the fate of two kingdoms at stake, she must harness her forbidden magic to uncover a truth that could change everything.
African American author L Penelope (a.k.a. Leslye Penelope) is criminally underrated! It’s been a while since I read this Time Magazine Best Fantasy Book of 2018, but I still remember how much I loved it. A compelling Black female lead who felt authentic, a romance I rooted for, and a lovely epic fantasy world—this book deserves more hype!

Unfortunately, my list only includes traditionally published authors for now. I’m always on the lookout for BIPOC own-voices indie authors who write (New) Adult fantasy or sci-fi with a touch of romance—especially those who don’t use AI-generated covers. If you have any recommendations, let me know!
